Brilliantly conceptualized and executed play. I was thoroughly entertained but also disturbed by the reality of it all. Loved it and need to see it more than once to fully appreciate its multiple layers.

In July of 2017 the Next Iteration Ensemble, NIE, began its first journey into devising a new play. With director, dianne k. webb, writer, Rhett Martinez, and 6 of our core actors  explored the concept of “Open Carry” gun laws, but the work quickly evolved into something much deeper, much more universal, much more human.

Support Next Iteration today and help us develop the full production of "Open Carry" and be a part of our process!

See what audience members from the staged readings are saying about

Open Carry: It's Loaded:

"Next Iteration's latest piece, OPEN CARRY: IT'S LOADED, delivers a scorching critique of American society without taking sides. This provocative new play challenges preconceptions about the proverbial 'us-against-them' that reaches far beyond the 2nd Amendment and taps into our own polarized partisanship, making it personal. Adding to it, the diversity of the company and cast reflects the world in which we live and not the one most commonly represented on stage and on screen. Kudos to Next Iteration for their courage and ambition!" -Samantha Rio

"Opening multiple possibilities is the advantage of true art.

In my mind, it was a highly successful play reading with an amazingly insightful audience." —Martha Woofter

"The play goes beyond “the open carry” and stimulates in the audience questions, feelings, instincts, and open discussion. It creates a fantasy that is more real than our own lives. The biggest question for me was, what is real and what is fantasy, what is sane and what is delirious, is it surrealism the only truth?" - Marta Rodriguez
